About the Association
The Bar Association of the City of Richmond (“Richmond Bar”) is a 1,450-member professional membership organization for attorneys, judges, and law students. Organized as a 501(c)6 non-profit corporation, the Association’s office is in downtown Richmond.

The Association’s mission is to promote the highest caliber of professionalism, advance the administration of justice, and foster members’ professional development through education, skills training, and networking. It facilitates professionalism and civility in the legal profession and fosters a collegial and productive relationship between the Bench and the Bar.

Position Summary
The executive director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for leading the efficient and effective day-to-day operation and administration of the Richmond Bar and working with volunteers to develop and implement the strategic plan. Operations include membership development, event planning, and supporting the Bar’s leadership and governing entities. There is one full-time staff member in addition to the executive director. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Primary Responsibilities

    Governance

• Provide strategic guidance to the Board on emerging issues, trends, and opportunities
• Ensure implementation of board-adopted policies and priorities
• Maintaining open lines of communication with the Board and keeping the Board apprised of matters affecting the Association
• Prepare board agendas in consultation with the President
• Administer nomination and election processes

    Membership Programs and Services

• Create and direct initiatives for membership outreach, engagement, and retention
• Manage continuing legal education (CLE) programs, including compliance with Virginia MCLE guidelines for provider certification
• Market programs, products, and services to members and potential members
• Edit and develop content for the monthly newsletter and website
• Plan and execute the annual Bench Bar Conference, Annual Meeting, and monthly Membership Luncheons
• Conduct outreach to stakeholders, including members of the Judiciary
• Support activity of seven substantive law sections, including the Young Lawyers Section

    Finances & Administration

• Oversee $425,000 budget
• Develop Sponsorship Program and non-dues revenue development
• Monitor income and expenses
• Prepare annual budget working with the Treasurer and the Finance Committee
• Distribute monthly financial reports
• Assure compliance with tax and regulatory filings
• Work with financial consultants such as investment advisors, accountants, and auditors
• Execute technology planning and upgrades, including membership management system
• Obtain proposals and bids for work as needed
• Ensure appropriate insurance policies are in place
• Supervise work by outside consultants

    Staff

• Supervise and manage staff, including hiring, annual performance reviews, and terminations
• Administer staff benefits and compensation
• Comply with federal, state, and local human resources-related statutes and regulations

Required Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree is required. Five to seven years of non-profit management experience, with expertise in marketing, program development, and financial administration

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary. Proficiency with standard software applications, including virtual program delivery platforms, is expected.

The candidate must be adept at multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment, maintain confidentiality, exercise good judgment, tact, and diplomacy, and be flexible, adaptable, and friendly.

Salary & Benefits
Salary is commensurate with experience with a range of $70,000-$80,000. Benefits include parking, health insurance, life insurance, and disability insurance.
